TIGER
TEAM: CLEMSON UNIVERSITY AND VOORHEES
STUDENTS WORK TOGETHER TO PROMOTE HEALTH
Clemson University
and the
Voorhees College
are working together
on a four-year collaborative NIH research project called EXPORT. Faculty
and students of both institutions are working together to help members
of the Voorhees community, as well as people in the surrounding towns
and counties , take steps to improve their health. One of the goals of
the EXPORT project is to bring students of Voorhees and Clemson together to work on community
initiatives that will better prepare the students for careers in health
and related fields. Dr. Karen Kemper is the private investigator of one of the EXPORT research projects that
is addressing physical activity promotion and obesity prevention at
Voorhees College
. In Spring 2004, several students from
Voorhees College
and Clemson University were identified to begin work with Dr. Kemper on the physical activity study. Several Clemson students have participated in the project: Chris Roeder worked on the
social marketing plan; Erin Gruesbeck, worked on designing health message
concepts and layouts; Stephen Heape assisted in enrolling 140 students
in the pedometer study; Kristian Gordan managed all of our data sets and
enrolled 72 participants in the Cardiovascular Risk Assessment study;
and Lawrence Black and Kala Benson measured blood pressures of study participants
attending the annual Voorhees Health Fair. Several students from
Voorhees College
also worked with Dr. Kemper throughout the year. These students included: Erica Meyers, Jarsalynn
Eichelberger, Jessica Thompson, Charita Scott, Peter Mukwevho, Dwanda
Gamble, Lynetta Gathers, Manda Jackson, and Tiffany Peterson. Together
they developed a campaign brand, several message slogans, and a group
identity (Tiger Team) for the Physical Activity promotion campaign.
In addition to designing the Tiger Team physical
activity messages, the Voorhees students
completed research training to collect data for pedometers, height, weight,
and waist circumference. In Fall 2005, the Tiger Team will design a health
intervention to prevent heart disease, diabetes and obesity among students
at Voorhees College.
