INTERNATIONAL
SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION INITIATIVE
Two faculty members of the Department
of Public Health Sciences, Dr. Hugh
D. Spitler and Dr. Eric Seiber, and
HEHD Grants
Coordinator Virginia Baird have worked with Dr. Corinne Gerwe, Larry Abernathy,
and Dr. Jerry Neal, faculty from the Counselor Education Program on projects
supporting a Memorandum of Agreement between the Russian Republic and
the Nancy Moore Thurmond Institute of the College
of Health, Education and Human Development, Clemson
University. In collaboration with the National
Peace Foundation, Dr. Gerwe and Dr.
Spitler have hosted visits to
Clemson
by Dr. Andrey Gerish, Director of the Office of Drug Prevention, Ministry
of Education, the Russian Federation and Dr. Olga Bessolova, President
of the Russian Institute for Social and Gender Policy. Based on these
initial visits, Dr. Spitler
and Dr. Gerwe have developed funding proposals for international research
projects with the National Institute on Drug Abuse and project Open World
of the Library of Congress. Work is currently under way to bring a group
of Russian substance abuse professionals for a two-week visit to Clemson
in the fall of 2005 for training in the application of Dr. Gerwe’s
treatment method for addiction relapse prevention among adults.
