Dr. Thompson graduated in 1995 with a Ph.D. in community psychology from Georgia State University. While there, she received a National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct her dissertation study. From 1997-1999, Dr. Thompson served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Division of Violence Prevention, where she stayed on as a Senior Research Fellow for an additional two years.
Dr. Thompson's currently has two NIH-funded grants. The other study focuses on risk factors and consequences of unwanted sexual experiences among first-year college females.
Dr. Thompson also works in the area of secondary data analysis. One study funded by the Alcohol Beverage Medical Research Foundation involved analyzing data from the National Violence Against Women Study examining alcohol and partner violence, and a study being funded by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention to analyze data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, a nationally-representative data base of youth, their parents, and teachers.

She also is working as a Co-PI with Dr. Hugh Spitler on his NIAAA-funded study to address high-risk drinking among first-year students.
