Lee Crandall is a medical sociologist, health services researcher, and social epidemiologist who was trained as a United States Public Health Service Fellow at Purdue University’s Health Services Research and Training Program.  He has been a faculty member at the University of Florida College of Medicine (1976-94), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1994-2000) and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (2000-2007).  Since July 2007 he has served as Professor and Chair of the Department of Public Health Sciences at Clemson University.

Research
Dr Crandall’s research has focused on issues of access to and quality of health and disability services, particularly for rural and minority populations, on issues at the interface of health policy and bioethics (including the insurance implications of predictive genetic testing and the implications of state policies on newborn screening) and more recently on the epidemiology and prevention of substance abuse.  His current research addresses the epidemiology of adolescent drinking and illicit drug use and evaluates the effectiveness of a variety of prevention and treatment programs for at-risk populations.  Recent projects include a partnership with Florida’s Department of Children and Families to evaluate over 200 substance abuse prevention programs statewide, partnerships with local providers in Florida and Georgia to evaluate substance abuse treatment, HIV/AIDS prevention, and pregnancy prevention programs, and a partnership with Florida’s Office of Drug Control to assess the effectiveness of efforts to coordinate and increase access to drug treatment for adolescents across multiple state agencies.

Administrative Experience
At the University of Florida’s College of Medicine, Dr. Crandall was Director of Research in the Department of Community Health and Family Medicine.  In 1994 he was recruited to serve as Professor and Head of the Department of Community Health at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  As department head, he facilitated the integration into the department of two freestanding academic units (gerontology and rehabilitation), expanded the doctoral program, and participated in the development of an innovative graduate program delivered to mid-career professionals in Ireland.  In 1998 the department was recognized as one of the nation’s top programs in both rehabilitation and community health.  Dr. Crandall stepped down from his position at Illinois in 1999 and relocated to the University of Miami’s School of Medicine where he served as Associate Chair for Administration in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, Deputy Director of the Comprehensive Drug Research Center, and also held adjunct faculty positions in the Department of Sociology and in the Department of Family Medicine.  He founded and directed an applied research unit, the Treatment and Prevention Evaluation Group, within the Comprehensive Drug Research Center.

Teaching
Dr. Crandall’s teaching interests include research methods, survey design, ethical issues in public health, substance abuse epidemiology, and the development of training related to the interface of bioethics and health policy.

Professional and Community Service
Dr. Crandall serves as a peer reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and is a member of the Florida Substance Abuse Prevention Advisory Council.  He is a past Program Chair for the Medical Care section of the American Public Health Association and is also past Chair of the Rural Health Committee of APHA.  He has been an American Heart Association (AHA) Volunteer at the local and state level since 1978, most recently as a local volunteer in Miami, Florida.  He also served as a director of the Alzheimer’s Association of East Central Illinois for three years and was a member of the Carle Hospital Ethics Committee in Urbana, Illinois.
