Dr. Rachel M. Mayo is an Associate
Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at Clemson University
and an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Health Promotion,
Education and Behavior, Norman School of Public Health at University of
South Carolina. Her research focus is chronic disease prevention and control
among underserved, predominantly Latino and African American communities.
She served as PI on two recent projects, Promotora
Training for Latina Women in the Upstate (2004-2005), a Susan G.
Komen Breast Cancer Foundation grant and The SC
Study of Cancer Survivors, funded by the American Cancer Society
(2002-2003). In the Promotora Training project, she examined the effectiveness
of a promotora training model on increasing breast and cervical cancer
screening among 45 low-income, Latina women. She has served as Co-PI on
the Accessible and Culturally Competent Hispanic
Health Care project (with Linda Crew, PI). This 3–year HRSA-funded
project served to increase primary health care access among low-income,
medically underserved Latinos. Dr. Mayo’s primary responsibility
was the development of “Trabajando Juntos para un Buen Comunidad”,
a promotora training and educational model providing information, resources
and skills to improve health education and preventive practices for rural
Latinos.
She collaborates regularly
on grant projects to improve access, screening and treatment for medically-underserved
populations. A Community Intervention to Reduce
Obesity and Related Illnesses for Low-Income Rural Populations
is a project funded by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina (2003-
2006). This project utilizes lay health advisors to address risk factors
associated with obesity among Latinos in Oconee County, SC. She served
as co-PI (Linda Crew, PI) for The Avon Health Connector
Project (2000-2002), funded by the Avon Breast Care Fund, a unique
project utilizing “lay health connectors” to recruit and educate
African American and minority women intro breast screening services.
Dr. Mayo has collaborated
with faculty at USC on the SC Partnership for Cancer
Prevention research project, where she facilitated focus groups
and assisted investigators in qualitative data analysis.
She is currently collaborating
with USC researchers in the Norman School of Public Health for the project,
Community Networks to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities
(funded by NCI, 2005-2010, James Hebert, PI). She will serve as a Co-investigator.
This project will specifically address the reduction in health disparities
among minorities in South Carolina for the four leading causes of cancer
in the state. |
